Community Bank Buninyong is proud to support the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute’s 2026 Twilight Talks program, helping a much-loved community series continue to inform and inspire.
Twilight Talks has become a true cornerstone of Ballarat’s cultural life, creating space for people to come together around local stories, research, history, current affairs, literature, travel and ideas. In 2025, the program delivered 14 talks, with most sessions held in the Humffray Room and drawing strong attendance from both members and the broader community.
The largest audience reached around 150 people for Stories of the Somme, held in the historic Minerva Space, where Belgian visitor Rene Degryse joined Ballarat’s Garry and Marion Snowden for a compelling conversation that clearly resonated with attendees.
Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute Chair of the Board Paula Nicholson said the program continues to hold a special place in the community.
“Twilight Talks continues to shine as one of Ballarat’s most cherished community learning programs. Community Bank Buninyong's investment ensures that local stories, research and voices are shared widely, strengthening our cultural life and sense of place, whilst importantly creating a space for community to come together to learn.”

Other topics across the series reflected the depth and variety that has made Twilight Talks such a valued offering, with presentations exploring Ballarat’s growth and infrastructure pressures, changes in the Ballarat car industry, environmental changes to the Canadian Corridor, Henry Lawson in Ballarat, the Chinese community in Bendigo, gold in Bendigo versus Ballarat, updates on Her Majesty’s Theatre, and a range of talks focused on war history, service, grief and memorabilia.
The impact reached well beyond the talks themselves. Strong attendance demonstrated ongoing community demand and created opportunities for the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute to engage with new audiences, strengthen its supporter network and foster potential new memberships. At the same time, the series contributed to Ballarat’s cultural vitality by offering accessible public education and meaningful community connection.
Community Bank Buninyong is proud to stand behind initiatives like Twilight Talks that bring people together and strengthen the cultural fabric of our region. We’re doing good things together.
