A quiet revolution is taking shape at the Ross Creek Wetlands, where a new bird hide is being made possible by support from Community Bank Buninyong, Ross Creek Landcare Group and the local community.
The hide creates a space for bird observation, student learning and community connection. Constructed on land belonging to Woady Yaloak Primary School’s Ross Creek Campus, it reflects years of careful planning and collaboration.

The project delivers three key outcomes:
Less intrusive observation of birdlife, supporting ongoing citizen science in partnership with the Latham’s Snipe Project.
Hands-on environmental learning for local students, expanding the wetlands’ use as a teaching resource.
A lasting memorial to the late Rosemary Barnett, a long-serving Landcare leader and Ross Creek champion, whose legacy lives on through this project.
The structure’s design was inspired by visits to other conservation sites like Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary and the Tasmanian Highlands. Rosemary’s husband, Trevor Barnett who is a Landcare committee member and past president has played a lead role in bringing the vision to life, alongside their sons.
“When we look at wetlands, what we see as ‘B-grade land’ can be an ‘A-grade’ plant and animal habitat. So much of what we’ve done has been inspired by others. As ever, we are inspired by those who have gone before us", Trevor said.
Beyond its practical uses, the bird hide is a symbol of what’s possible when local knowledge and shared purpose come together. It will help raise awareness of wetland ecosystems and strengthen Ross Creek’s connection to nature for years to come.
