Garden Skills That Stick

Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre is turning gardening into something much more useful - hands-on learning, practical skills and real-world impact.

With funding from Community Bank Buninyong, the 'Our Garden, Your Garden' program delivered:

  • Weekly food production sessions for the Centre’s kitchen

  • Composting, worm farming, and smart water use

  • Pollinator workshops, native plantings, and student-led garden signage

  • Refurbished herb gardens used by hospitality students

  • Corporate volunteer days and hands-in-the-dirt learning

The food grown ends up in hot meals. The skills stick long after the tools are down.

Gardener Matt Rowbottom said...

“This funding gave people the chance to try real tasks including propagation, managing nutrients, composting. It wasn’t just theory. We’ve grown food that gets eaten, and built knowledge that lasts.”

More locals are showing up. More schools are asking to be involved. And volunteers are getting stuck into meaningful tasks that go beyond the garden bed.

This is how you build something that lasts.
